With so many variations and themes in yoga , it’s hard for beginners to to understand what style is best for them.
This post breaks down the key points of Vinyasa Flow. We have Beginners courses starting in this style next week, and the week after. Find details of these here – www.lightbirdyoga.co.uk, or PM for more information.
ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT VINYASA FLOW
Vinyasa means “breath-synchronized movement,” and with that short sentence, you’ve got the basics of vinyasa flow.
It’s also good to know that it’s the most popular form of yoga in the West right now. Other than that, in a typical Flow class:
1. YOU STAY IN A FLOW
Vinyasa Flow keeps you moving, linking each pose to an inhale and an exhale.
Instructors usually keep the flow smooth and continuous, helping you stay connected and present. However, at Lightbird Yoga, there are also regular breaks in the flow, so that we can teach you the basics of each posture, and then we integrate that posture into the flow
2. GET VARIETY
Instructors mix up the order of the poses, and occasionally throw in something new.
The benefits are that you (and your teacher) stay awake and learn. However, at Lightbird Yoga, we also make sure there is a bedrock of repetition, so that you that actually learn the postures and techniques, in a sustainable manner.
3. CAN CHOOSE WHICH CLASS IS BEST FOR YOU
There are no set-in-stone rules, and teachers can incorporate whatever they choose – including different styles of yoga, music and meditation.
If one class doesn’t click with you, just try another. We have lots of yoga classes and styles, so you can choose the class that is right for you.
4. CAN CHOOSE SLOW, RELAXING FLOWS, ENERGIZING FLOWS OR A MIX
Classes incorporate elements from all schools of yoga, from Iyengar standing poses to Anusara inversions. Slow flow classes are gentler, while others aim to build strength, flexibility, and balance in a wilder, more energizing way.
5. GET CARDIO
Stronger classes are great for getting your heart going. You do get ‘breaks’ in resting poses like Downward Dog or Child which then lead to into more challenging sequences.
6. DON’T NEED YOGA EXPERIENCE
At Lightbird Yoga studio, we offer classes tailored specifically to beginners. This style is a fantastic way to learn the basic yoga postures, yogic breathing and relaxation techniques, giving you all you need to build a strong foundation for a more advanced yoga practice.
7. HAVE FUN AND YOU WORK OUT
With flowing movements and great music, it’s a party class, that gets you fit and flexible at the same time. What’s not to like?
